First, I am an independent database consultant. ArtLogic is first of all designed superbly. It looks amazing, it's something the user is happy to use. Working in an art gallery, this is very helpful as we want things to look good. And the artworks looks super in this database. Staff are happy to use a database that looks good and easy to use. It's comfortable and sleek unlike a lot of databases. Navigation is very easy, everything is clear. Clarity is everything! Artlogic can also design your website, and link it to the DB. I can email a client directly from the database, attach artwork images in various sizes and make an offer all in one go. They have an accounting database which also works with the main database. Everything is linked. I can see what artworks a client was offered, bought, received, the amount paid, where it was shipped to, who shipped it, when they received it, the dimensions of the crate.... I can see the purchase order, shipping docket, the original offer, the tracking of the shipment.... I can send out event invitations, register attendees at an event in real time, tag all attendees automatically. This is all recorded in one database. The searching mechanism is one super useful feature. I used this extensively and found that it was very applicable when looking for the right clients for a particular event. Really, I could go on. I found their support service to be better than any other database I've worked through.

Drawbacks:

I didn't encounter any negative aspects to using the ArtLogic suite.

My overall experience with ArtLogic was hugely positive. The ability to do everything from start to finish without using 3rd party software was incredible. Their Private Views system looks amazingly when showing to a client. It's a very impressive way to start a sale process. And it's super user-friendly. This is an important factor for staff. The start-to-finish recording of an artwork sale process is key. And it's done all in real time over the internet! ArtLogic imported data, set up the website, handled the training and updates . They also gave consistently high support when needed. From a database consultant perspective it was a pleasure to work with the ArtLogic suite.

It's broken down into the sections I need and more importantly what my clients both respond to and want to see. For years I was playing around with sites like Wordpress, square space and customizing individual themes. None of which truly catered to what I do. I found myself wasting so much time building and rebuilding websites. It took me about 1 month if that to fully have the site set up how I liked it and since then I've not had to waste anymore time on it. More time I can spend creating images ! I've noticed by bounce rate dropped from 60 percent to 30 percent and the average time people spend on the site has gone way up. The database keeps all my images in sync and I'm able to run my one to one teaching from the site as well.

A powerful inventory, client contact and art inventory database, with an elegant interface. The website integration is excellent, and it's very easy to share artworks in the database to your Artlogic hosted website. This has saved us a lot of time in double entering and updating discreet inventory systems and our website. The Artlogic tech support team is friendly, informative and responsive, although the time difference with England can sometimes result in a lag.

Given the sophistication of this system, several easily remedied cons are perplexing. Artlogic has taken the approach of creating a plethora of data entry fields - literally hundreds - in the contacts and artworks entry panes. Navigation is not always intuitive, and the learning curve with this program is steep. The simple ability for clients to create user defined fields, or at a minimum, hide fields not relevant to a gallery's business model, would save hours of tabbing, scrolling, hunting and pecking. Especially vexing is the process for entering dates - it is not possible to enter a date with keystrokes (ie. "02/05/1936") - one must click though a drop down calendar, and for dates that are decades in the past this is a carpal tunnel hazard requiring scores of clicks to enter a single date. Artlogic has been approached about this, but does not see the need for offering these features common in much less pricey databases. The other perplexing con is the absence of an online manual, FAQ, or user discussion group. There are a few videos, but given the complexity of the program, easily searchable instructional databases could save significant staff and training time, both for Artlogic's clients and for their technical support team.

Once set up on Artlogic, you will have a comprehensive, elegant and well integrated database and website. The learning curve is steep and considerable time invested in data entry, staff training and familiarization should be anticipated. Several seemingly simple fixes could significantly flatten the learning curve, but Artlogic has indicated that they do not see these as priorities.

Benefits:

I think the software has allowed us to be much more prompt and efficient with sales.

Drawbacks:

Nothing in particular - I wish there were options to input multiple currencies for one artwork.

Having used Artsystems Pro (with Cloud Sync) for a number of years, I was impressed by its wealth of features and attentive support team. Being able to quickly generate custom reports on a searched-for selection of artworks has been invaluable. Our database, which contains a considerable amount of content, including many images and some custom data fields, was then migrated seamlessly from Artsystems Pro to Artsystem5. With Artsystem5, all of the functionality and more has been very successfully moved to a powerful and convenient web-based system.

Although Artsystems Pro worked very well and was equally well supported, it did require a supervised (video call and remote machine access) update every time Mac OS received a major update. With the migration to the fully web-based Artsystem5 this inconvenience was removed.

Functionality allows me to eliminate the redundancy of data input and output in different business processes (inventory, consignment, invoicing, reporting, etc.). Easy to learn. Excellent customer support program. Better control of inventory pays for itself.

Drawbacks:

As a fine art landscape photographer with a growing portfolio and numerous gallery relationships, I found that managing my print inventory with Excel was no longer adequate to my needs. I have adopted Artsystems Pro, and with its flexibility and robust data management capabilities, I know where all of my prints are, and my consignment, invoicing,reporting and contact management workflow is vastly simplified. Software support has been excellent. The savings I have realized from being on top of otherwise-misplaced inventory is well worth the investment cost of Artsystems Pro alone!

My gallery has been served by Artsystems since its establishment in 2006. Over the years, we have migrated our database easily to newer and ever improving Artsystems client and data management tools, which connects to and serves the website that Artsystems designed and hosts for us.

Drawbacks:

Like all software, it requires updates and adjustments to keep pace with every advancing computer operating systems.

I've been using Artsystems Pro (with Cloud Sync) for a few years and have been impressed by its extensive feature set and responsive support team. It's been essential to be able to rapidly build custom reports on a certain set of artwork. Our database, which has a lot of material, including a lot of photos and some unique data columns, was then effortlessly moved from Artsystems Pro has been upgraded to Artsystem5. Artsystem5 has effectively converted all of the features and more to a robust and convenient web-based system.

Although Artsystems Pro performed admirably and was highly maintained, it did necessitate a supervised (video chat and remote machine access) update whenever the Mac OS received a major update. This issue was eliminated with the switch to Artsystem5, which is completely web-based.
