Benefits:

One of the best databases to be used for RDF data. Easier to learn for users already familiar with SQL

Drawbacks:

No proper user/community support. Even installation can be a tough task, as there is proper guidelines.

«Venerable RDF triplestore, with more!»

Benefits:

The OpenLink team made an early commitment to semantic databases and to the dual license model. They remain innovative and contribute to useful blogs, StackOverflow posts, etc. Virtuoso is used as the back-end for many important global, academic semantic projects. Virtuoso includes other database and content modalities and other query languages (besides RDF and SPARQL). There are numerous useful plugins, and bindings to numerous database APIs.

Drawbacks:

I find Virtuoso harder to deploy and manage than the newer Java-based triplestores. The documentation is voluminous but somewhat disjointed.

In sum:

When I first started with biomedical semantics around 2013, Virtuoso was the only triplestore that I used to integrate "my" project data with public linked data sets. That put me in a good position to use remote Virtuoso-hosted semantic data, in many realms beyond medicine.
